Ever since a tea merchant in Kyoto experimented with roasting leftover green tea leaves and stems over charcoal in 1920, Hojicha (Houjicha) has been cherished by old to young in all regions of Japan for its comforting, nutty aroma and warm, mellow taste. In recent years, hojicha has quickly gained popularity as the next tea trend worldwide.

Our hojicha is imported directly from Shizuoka, Japan in a powder form. Hojicha powder can be prepared just like matcha, with your favorite milk or just water. We also like to add a little maple syrup to our hojicha latte for the perfect feel-good drink. 

Thanks to the high amount of L-theanine in combination with low caffeine, hojicha has a relaxing and calming effect. Acidity and caffeine contents are reduced by the roasting process, so you can drink it at any time of day. Traditionally, many Japanese drink hojicha after a meal, which helps alleviate the feeling of bloating and heaviness after eating.

Located between the Pacific coast and the Japanese Alps, close to Mt. Fuji, Shizuoka enjoy the perfect climate, fertile volcanic soil, and gently sloping hills ideal for tea cultivation. Generations of skilled farmers combine tradition with modern techniques to produce teas with vibrant color, fresh grassy aroma, and balanced umami-sweetness, earning Shizuoka its reputation as Japan’s top tea-growing region.

How To Prepare

Hojicha Shot: Sift 1 tsp (2-2.5g) of hojicha powder into a bowl. Pour 30-40 ml of warm water at 80ºC (176°F). Whisk in fast zip-zag motion for around 30 seconds until frothy and clump-free.

Straight: To drink it pure as straight tea, add more water to the hojicha shot. Enjoy hot or over ice.

Hojicha Latte: Add 200-300ml of your favorite milk to the hojicha shot. Enjoy hot or over ice. We love adding maple syrup for added sweetness.

Schmeckt sehr gut

Ich mag den feinen gerösteten Geschmack sehr gerne in Kombination mit Mandelmilch.

Angenehmer Hojicha

Bei einer Gradzahl von 85 wird er besonders aromatisch. Sehr lecker

Tut, was er soll (und das gut!)

Für mich persönlich ein bisschen zu viel geröstet, da nicht mehr so viele Aromen einem entgegen kommen beim Trinken, allerdings macht er sich wunderbar in Lattes.
Mit Mandelmilch erinnert er sehr an einen Edelbitterkakao mit Umami-Noten und einer feinen herben Note, ohne überschwänglich aufdringlich zu sein. In Oatly Barista braucht er definitiv irgendein Süßungsmittel, um nicht unterzugehen, aber dann schmeckt er auch richtig gut!
