Demand for matcha is growing worldwide. And so are prices in Japan. Like many tea brands, we’ve had to adjust our prices, too. Here’s why and what remains important to us.

More Matcha Love. Higher Prices.

Matcha is more popular than ever, which makes us happy. But good matcha takes time: tea plants must grow for years before they’re ready for harvest, the leaves are carefully shade-grown, and the harvesting and processing require considerable care. On top of that, climate change and a declining number of tea farmers in Japan are putting additional pressure on supply.

Supply simply cannot keep up with demand at the same pace.

The numbers speak for themselves: In 2026, tencha prices in Kyoto rose by around 70 % and in Kagoshima by around 80 % compared to the previous year respectively. And that’s just the cost of the raw material.

Why Origin Matters More Than Ever

As matcha continues to grow in popularity, the market keeps filling up with products from a wide range of origins and quality levels sold as high-quality Japanese matcha. However, it’s not always clear where the green powder actually comes from.

For us, that matters. Because great matcha starts long before the first sip.

What This Means for Matchasome

We’ve secured outstanding-quality matcha from the 2026 harvest. However, we’ve had to pay significantly higher purchase prices. We’ve absorbed as much of the additional costs as possible, but will have to pass on some of the rest. That’s why we’re adjusting our prices.

What stays the same? 100 % organic ceremonial grade matcha from Japan, sourced from tea farmers we know personally, and laboratory testing in Germany.

We want you to continue trusting the quality and origin of your matcha. And we want the people who grow it to be paid fairly. Compromising on quality is simply not an option for us.

Thank you for making this possible with us.
